Since Hatter has once again enjoyed a book I have suggested to him, I have decided to make a monthly go at providing him new and entertaining things to read.

We will start this off with my last suggestion to him,in the interests of catching everybody up.

First up? "old man logan".

The neat thing about Old Man Logan is that it's a Wolverine story that doesn't actually feel like a wolverine story at all. Instead of having to endure the tough guy bullshit and having the stakes elevated continually throughout the book, we see Logan at a low point and trying to fight that eventual succumbing to the old berserker thing.
This alone makes it pretty novel and if going against the typical grain of wolverine appearances wasn't enough to sell me the book, the presentation of 'the future' would probably still rope me in. There's a lot of things about the setting that aren't easily explained, but the 'awwwww crap' factor makes them entertaining, and they succeed in capturing the imagination. Giant Man's bones? Venom Dinosaurs? The Red Skulls little happy room?

Hatter made the comparison to origin in this book, in that we're sold something we didn't expect. I agree with that. I expected this story to be a clint eastwood 'unforgiven' type thing with the aging gunfighter suiting up one more time. I am glad to be wrong here, because I never thought the whupped and beaten Logan story would ever be such an enjoyable read.

The thing about this arc is that it remembers what makes Wolverine, or any great Marvel character, compelling. His human struggle. The great Wolverine stories remember that he's a guy who really doesn't want to be what the universe seems to have designed him to be, all the while realizing that he's only truly happy when he's not fighting his nature. Wolverine's a guy who wants to be better than he is and this is frequently forgotten in stories that are just 22 pages of him taking people to 'Claw City'. This is what ham-fisted writers like Larry Hama falied to portray. This is what was great in the original Claremont/Miller miniseries.

And in the midst of all the cool comic book shit, it's what was great about Old Man Logan. I like seeing Wolverine try to be better in a world that doesn't want to let him. And maybe even needs him not to be.

The funny thing is, this book almost slipped right under my radar. I see "wolverine" and I immediately tune out. Word of mouth about the "Hulk hicks" prompted me to look at it.

I really enjoyed these books. I was able to get everything but the last book. I'll probably buy the run in trade format just to get it.

I liked Hawkeye's attitude and situation the best, I think. The series was a post-apocalyptic buddy movie... What if the world ends and, against your will, you had a role in making it all happen? What do you do when everything you knew is gone but you're still here?

The Rising Stars Compendium

This is probably JMS strongest comic work. While issue 1 feels like it's about to deliver a watchmen ripoff/homage, the entire story unfolds into something quite different. While it's essentially a silver age type story, it's told through modern eyes and sensibilities.

I'm not a big fan of modern marvel or their company events. Most of them are stretched out beyond their sustaining point,and character is usually sacrificed for some big hoopla. Civil War ruinned the character of Iron Man for me, and I thought it would be a long time before I was interested in Tony Stark stories again. I was perfectly content to let the occasional Ellis snide commentary sustain me.
World's most wanted got me rooting for Tony again. In the aftermath of Secret Invasion Norman Osborn has seized control of US security, dismantled SHIELD, and turned Tony Stark into the ultimate scapegoat. Now residing in Avengers tower, Norman begins a manhunt for Stark hoping to squeeze every drop of SHRA information from him to further his own agendas. Stark retaliates by destroying his own mind and sending Maria Hill and other allies into lateral plans designed to stop Osborn.
The really neat thing about this story is how by effectively "wiping" his brain, Stark begins losing his intellect, and he is forced to continually downgrade his armors so he can continue using them. By doing so, we see him effectively moving backwards through his career and the various incarnations of Iron Man as he tries to undo some of the damage he's done.
For all of bendis blathering about Tony the futurist and then suddenly revealing nonsensical leaps in character motives to support the claim, this story by fraction was really the first to highlight Stark trying to think ahead of everybody and himself while he races to the endgame. While the middle chapters can sometimes drag a bit, the overall story is quite strong, and it's one of the best examinations of the character in recent years. And after that awesome comeuppance asswhupping by Thor in the early issues of the god of thunders new book, I was ready to root for tony again.

I have now read the entire Old Man Logan trade. I liked the ending. It was very satisfying.
